Amarkantak
is a great pilgrim centre for Hindus, situated at an altitude of 1065 mt in
Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh. It is a sanskrit word which means immortal
(amar) obstruction (kantak). The poet Kalidas has mentioned it as Amarkoot,
which later became Amarkantak. |

It is source of origin of three important
rivers (Narmada, Sone and Juhila). Narmada occupies a unique place among all
the sacred rivers of India. It's a place where Vindhya and the Satpura ranges
meet. The place is famous for "Shivratri Mela" which is held anually during the
festival of Shivratri. Sonemuda is the place of
origin of Sone river. It gets its name form gold as the gold dust
is found in the water of Sone. The third river is Juhila River situated at a
distance of 8 km from Amarkantak on Shahdol road.
