Jabalpur
is considered to be the cultural capital of Madhya Pradesh. It has a collection
of historical, archeological and natural places. It is also a major
administrative and educational centre. The spacious cantonment area is dotted
with unusual number of schools and colleges. Antiquity of the town can be
traced back to Mahabharta era. Jabalpur was the pleasure resort and capital of
Gond Kings during the 12th century and was later the seat of Kalchuri dynasty.
It is the most convenient base to visit the famous Kanha (173 km) and
Bandhavgarh (194 km) National Parks.

Madan Mahal Fort :
Built by the Gond King Madan Shah in 1116 atop a rocky hill. The fort dominates
the skyline of the city and provides a panoramic view of the surroundings.
Sangram Sagar & Bajnamath : These medieval constructions were built in the memorial by the Gond King Sangram Shah, between 1480 - 1540. Rani Durgavati Memorial & Museum : The memorial is built in the memory of Queen Durgavati. The museum has a fine collection of sculptures, inscriptions and pre-historic relics. Marble Rocks at Bheraghat : The magnificient Marble rocks soaring in glittering splendour rise to hundred feet on each side of the Narmada river. Boating facilities are available from November to May. Boating by moonlight is a thrilling experience. Excellent artifacts carved in soap stone are available here. Dhuandhar Fall : Narmada river making its way through the Marble Rocks, narrows down and then plunges in a waterfall known as Dhundhar or smoke cascade. The roaring fall can be heard from a far distance. The fall and the breaking of the volume of water at the crest presents magnificient spectacle. Chausath Yogini Temple : The 10th century shrine of goddess Durga is situated atop a hillock. The temple is approached by a long flight of steps and commands an awe-inspiring view of the Narmada river flowing through thde jagged marble rocks. The Samadhi of Rani Durgavati : The heroic tales of Rani Durgavati are recorded in history. A monument is built at a place where she laid her life in a battle. Her statue, riding over an elephant, is erected here. Devtal : It was one of the resorts of Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya. It has a beautiful lake nearby and is near Madan Mahal. Pisanhari Ki Madiya : A Jain temple is constructed by a poor lady. This is near the medical college. Tripuri : Tripuri was the capital of Kalchuri kings. It is at a distance of 16 kms from Jablapur. The ruins here can be seen even now. Accessibility - : It is well connected by roads and air with Delhi, Bhopal, Gwalior and Raipur. It is a main rail-head on the Mumbai - Howrah via Allahabad main line. |
| Kanha is a game reserve which was
the hunting reserve of the Viceroy of India, before being constituted into a
National Park in 1955. Today, it is rated by conservationists as one of the
best maintained parks in Asia. Kanha's 1208 sq. km of grasslands, sal groves
and bamboo forests are a heaven for wildlife.
The tiger roams free in Kanha National Park, which forms the core of Kanha Tiger Reserve created in 1974. The park is also the only habitat of the rare hardhoned barasingha. The other animals that can be seen here are the panther, sambar, chithal, gaur, black buck. There are also over 100 species of birds. Accessibility - The most convenient railhead is at Jabalpur. A motorable road connects Kanha with Jabalpur, Nagpur and Bilaspur. |
